Unimer – harnessing the forces of nature

Updated: Jan 21

With a completely eco-friendly bilge pump for small leisure boats, Unimer wants to make boating easier – and more sustainable. Pairing up with FibreStrap means offering an environmentally friendly solution – both in product and packaging.

Swedish innovation is thriving. Utilizing the motion of waves and wind when the boat is moored, the Drainman is Unimer’s innovative bilge-pump designed for small leisure boats – completely eco-friendly and with no electricity required.

“ With a product designed to make boating life not only easier, but also sustainable, it is extremely important to us to use 100% eco-friendly and biodegradable packaging”, says Carl Magnusson, Managing Director at Unimer.

Protecting the oceans – and the product

Unimer's breakthrough product Drainman and their collection of rubber mooring snubbers stand for innovation, comfort, and safety. For years they have been collaborating with DS Smith for packaging on their industrial range.

“ Last year, we decided to develop entirely new eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing packaging for our Drainman, made from biodegradable cardboard that preferably uses recycled materials”, says Carl.

While sustainability is key, Unimer’s new packaging solution demands no compromise on neither quality nor design. An important part of the project was eliminating the small plastic cable ties used to secure the pump hose in the packaging, to eliminate the risk of plastic materials ending up in nature when the Drainman is unpacked.

To find the best packaging solution – with the smallest environmental footprint – Unimer collaborated with DS Smith, who early on identified a number of improvements that needed to be done.

“We received samples of solutions in cardboard material but were not fully satisfied with them. DS Smith then introduced us to FibreStrap, which became a perfect choice for us and reinforced the eco-friendly impression of the product”, says Carl.

Strong, recyclable and biodegradable

Made of long fibres from the Scandinavian forests FibreStrap is strong, recyclable, and biodegradable.Switching from plastic solutions for securing and fastening to FibreStrap, reduces carbon footprint and water usage with 80 percent. And Folke Najjar, Co-founder of FibreStrap is equally happy about this sustainable chance to protect the oceans and marinas.

“It makes sense for us to collaborate with Unimer. We love their innovative core and how they work with nature instead of against it – and we have common interests in keeping the oceans free from plastics”, says Folke.
