Sustainability and responsibility
Everything we do at FibreStrap aims to do good for the planet and future generations. We produce sustainable cable ties to make sure the industry will no longer have to rely on products that are made to last for hundreds of years, only to be used once. We present you with a sustainable option, manufactured and shipped in the most sustainable way available. Change is good.
How FibreStrap will make a change
By using FibreStrap, instead of plastic cable ties, you will make a difference. Your actions will make sure that no plastic cable tie from your organisation will end up in oceans or lie in nature for hundreds of years. Replacing the plastic cable tie with FibreStrap will give substantial sustainability benefits without compromising quality and endurance.
Compared with fossil plastic cable ties, you will get more than an 80% reduction in CO2 and water consumption – A minimum 85% of the material is made from renewable sources.
Environmental impact
FibreStrap is designed with the intent to utilise as many plant-based materials as possible and minimize the environmental footprint in the product lifecycle. This includes materials, manufacturing, supply chain, waste, and material usage. FibreStrap is manufactured with ethical, and socially responsible local production. FibreStrap is produced in Scandinavia with fossil-free energy.
The sustainable benefits include:
-
>85% improvement in CO2 reduction.
-
>80% water reduction.
-
More than 85% of the material is from renewable sources.
-
Material reduction: With lengths that can be customised, so you only use the material you need. FibreStraps flexibility enables stitching which allows you to use less FibreStraps than plastic cable ties.
-
Fossil plastic reduction
-
Sustainable packaging – no plastic bags and the option to use hanger cards rather than boxes for in-store display.
Reusability
If not too short when mounted together with a product, FibreStrap can be reused by the end-user – your customer. They can use it for binding e.g. bushes, small trees, cables and other objects at home. FibreStrap is designed to have a second life with the same purpose as in the first life – to gather and bind products.
Recyclability
End-user recycling: In the majority of cases, FibreStrap can be recycled in paper recycling together with fibre-based packaging.
Factory recycling: When mounting a product with a cable tie the operators cut off the end piece of the cable tie. With FibreStrap, this part is 100% paper and can be recycled directly in paper recycling at the factory.
Production recycling: 0% Bio composite waste, 100% paper recycling (Paper stream)
Biodegradability
FibreStrap is designed to an intended life length, made to biodegrade in a reasonable time.
End-of-life opportunities
FibreStrap allows for recycling, compared with plastic cable ties that don't have a stream for recycling. Plastic nylon cable ties often end up in our environment and oceans, around birds, pinnipeds, seals, and turtles and don’t biodegrade during their lifetime, FibreStrap reduces this risk since the cord is made of paper.
Compost
The PLA (the bio composite) in FibreStrap is industrial compostable. The paper is home compostable and the FibreStrap intended to bio-degrade within a reasonable time.
Paper from Scandinavian forests
The pure core of FibreStrap's existence is sustainability in every way possible. This is why we have worked hard to ensure that the materials we choose are sustainable and responsibly produced and handled.
The strong FibreStrap cord
The cord is made from 99.9% kraft paper from Scandinavian wood fibres. To prevent abrasion, the cord is treated with a negligible amount of polyethene wax (0.1%).
The reliable FibreStrap lock
Today the lock is made from a bio-composite which contains 50% thermoplastic aliphatic polyester or more commonly named Polylactic acid (PLA), 20 % hemp and 30% Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT).
The PLA is 100% bio-based and made from hemp and sugar cane. The sugar canes meet the Bonsucro Code of Conduct, are grown in Thailand and do not compete with land used for food production. The bio-composite material fulfils the requirements of the European harmonised standard EN 13432:2000.
The hemp is produced in the EU and certified according to International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS).
PBAT is a polyester that is commonly used e.g., compostable plastic bags and food packaging. PBAT is biodegraded through hydrolysis and by biological activity in soil and compost environments.
Our sustainable methods
At FibreStrap, we are not only supporting our customers in their transition to sustainable materials and solutions, but we are also making sure that we, as a company, are doing everything we can to ensure sustainability throughout the whole process.
FibreStrap is designed with the intent to utilise as many plant-based materials as possible and minimize the environmental footprint in the product's life cycle. This includes materials, manufacturing, supply chain, waste, and material usage. Sustainability is the core of everything we do here at FibreStrap.
Transportation
Transportation is a challenge. We try to push out air and optimize our transports as much as possible – from packaging to pallets. We carefully consider the type of packaging materials we use. For smaller shipments, we are using Green Choice alternatives if possible. For bulk, we pay extra for “green transportation”.
Energy
In the production of FibreStrap, we only use fossil-free energy. We take our part in the responsibility for counter climate change seriously. The world has to move on from harmful fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas.
Waste
100% Bio composite recycling: all bio-composite residues are grounded and looped back into production.
100% paper recycling: if we generate any paper waste material, it goes straight into paper recycling.
Materials
The FibreStrap cord: we have selected the best material regarding performance and sustainability. The cord is made from wood fibres from Nordic forests. 100% of our material is FCS sourced and produced in integrated mills.
The FibreStrap lock: we have selected a biocomposite that will biodegrade in a reasonable time, made from hemp fibres and sugar cane. The lock fulfils the requirements of EN 13432:2000 Bio composite: REACH compliant. Nonfood conflict source.
Traceability
We track and document all of our raw materials, parts, and finished goods throughout our manufacturing process. This way, we know that we can take full responsibility for the impact the production of FibreStrap has on the planet. And we also know what parts can be improved as soon as there is a more sustainable option available.
Water
No water is used in the production of FibreStrap. Water is consumed when producing the raw materials, we refer to the characterizing LCA.
Chemicals
The biocomposite is compliant according to REACH. The paper contains no additives.
Sustainable workplace
We have created a workplace that safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of our employees. FibreStrap is produced in Sweden, and the workplace is union regulated.
Certified and sustainable
The production of FibreStrap is certified according to ISO, International Organizaton for Standardization, 9001 and 14001. Which includes a certification of green energy use.
